Personally I'd love to see it done as an animation... not like Disney style or anything, but something more similar to Haibane Renmei, Paprika, Ghost in the Shell, or the Animatrix. Probably just because I love animation so much, but somehow I think it would work better than live action.
I know that's not going to happen, though. 
It would take a seriously gutsy studio to produce PoN as a movie the way it deserves. Very much NC-17 material.
(As far as the suggestion of David Lynch as a director--that would be [i:2g35yfoy]amazing[/i:2g35yfoy]. I don't think he'd have a problem with the subject matter at all, either.)
