Character heights in Earwa posted 02 Feb 2005, 17:02 by Mithfânion, Didact

Scott, Tolkien and Martin seem to have this fascination for their character's heights, not just describing it but even attributing certain characteristics or standings to people of great height. I've always wondered about the various heights in the PoN books as well, so it would be informative if you could indicate some figures :) I'm curious about what you had imagined for the following: -Kellhus -Cnaiur -Achamian -Cunuroi as a race, their average height -Inchoroi as a race, their average height -The Sranc -Mallahet -Conphas -Proyas -Yalgrota Perhaps you don't have any figures in mind? If so, what height would the above generally be? Maybe other posters could state their impressions as well? view post

Interesting question. I think I actually have a pretty clear idea of their [i:fjagio60]relative[/i:fjagio60] heights, using myself and Kellhus as a reference point. -Kellhus 6'6" -Cnaiur 6'4" -Achamian 5'7" -Cunuroi as a race, their average height 6' -Inchoroi as a race, their average height 8'+ -The Sranc 4'8" -Conphas 5'10" -Proyas 5'11" -Yalgrota 7'10" -Esmenet 5'3" -Serwe 5'5" You have to remember that most caste-menials would be under 5'6" due to their diets. view post

Hey, that's very interesting! Kellhus and Cnaiur are obviously tall men, as I had expected. Hadn't expected Achamian quite so short, but certainly short. The women's heights feel right as well. I don't really know why but I had imagined the Cunuroi's average height as taller than men ( I guess it comes from their general " superiority " in terms of innate power) . Of course, the average height of the race of men (probably) isn't 6 ft, but the difference is still quite small. The Inchoroi are gigantic. You forgot Mallahet btw. What about him? Or Skayelt? I'd ask about Moenghus but since we haven't actually met him yet that's a bit premature. How about your namesake? Average height Cunuroi? view post

I left out Mallahet on purpose, since I seem to remember there was some speculation regarding him in one of the different forums. I didn't want to prejudice things one way or the other. I've never thought about Skaiyelt... About 5'11" maybe? view post

Re;Mallahet I figured ;) There was discussion about him possibly being Moenghus so a height estimate could be indicative there. What about Cujara Cinmoi (seems odd to ask since we haven't seen him yet but in case the text doesn't mention it it's good to know)? view post

Well I just pulled out his license and it says he's 6'6"... view post

Figures ;) No wonder why you kept looking down on me after the booksigning :P Man, to be 5'11 and be so short in comparison... So... are there any marked differences in height between the various ethnic groups in the Three Seas area, or are they relatively the same? Oh, and just an idle thought - how come we don't hear of too many short, balding, porty superfighters in fantasy series? I mean, it'd be a natural for some of us, yes? ;) view post

Well, to 'portly', if nothing else, it seems to me that superfighting would be a very slimming profession... :P view post

There's a difference in height between ketyai and norsirai, but this is dietary, not intrinsic. And I'll do what I can to keep Achamian from hearing that slam, shorty... People think you have to go to New Zealand to visit Hobbiton. I just need to step out my door in the morning! view post

Just to burst your bubble here, Scott - you know the human skeletal system is much less efficient for those over six foot tall, right? Looks like you might have years and years of debilitating arthritis to look forward to, yes? :P And speaking of dietary stuff, what are the main foods eaten in the main ethno-cultural regions? view post

and yet tall people earn higher pay and have better jobs than short people. They're also more attractive to women. Lots of research to back this up. So i don't know about their skeletal systems giving out later on, but they'll definately enjoy the intervening years ps... how many short supermodels do you know  view post

I think Larry is working on that short super-model thing, ilana ... In the Three Seas proper, cereals (primarily in the form of breads and gruels) provide the main source of calories for the populace, supplemented by meats where possible. In the Middle-North, cereals are likewise important, but there is generally more meats... "Meats back on the menu boys!" view post

Funny that all of the Orcs in Jackson's adaptation of the LoTR had these strong English accents btw, I wonder if he was hammering home a point :) view post

As for women supermodels, point taken, although most aren't giants either at the 5'7-5'10" mark, just merely a bit taller than average. But then again, I sound like I'm compensating, don't I? :P Well, bah to that! Maybe I'll just move to South America, where I'd be almost a giant, or to South Florida anyways... ;) And Scott, cool bit about the dietary stuff. I figured that might be the case, but wasn't for sure. Of course, that leads to questions of how the Norsiri were organized (were they tribal-based like the Celts, or more hierarchial than that?), possibly as a result of how their food production was arranged. view post

Scott, now Aldarion makes me curious. Exactly how tall are you yourself? Ilana [i:1eehqpex]and yet tall people earn higher pay and have better jobs than short people[/i:1eehqpex] Is that so? Apparently I've been missing out again :) view post

He's about 6'6, easily. Besides, he made a joke about it earlier when saying that he consulted Cu'jara Cinmoi's driver's license ;) view post

... does anyone know where I can get some platform shoes to wear to a possible book-signing in the future? btw, Kellhus is TALLER THAN CLINT EASTWOOD! holy crap man, that's something when you can look down at Josey Wales... and erm, I guess you are too... view post

Late addition, Scott, how tall would you say Maithanet is? What about Saubon? view post

The tallest man I dated was 6'2" tall. Since I am 5' it made things like the spontaneous kiss impossible, unless I was satisfied with smooching the breastbone. Perception and actual height are two different things though. One can seem taller due to charisma or intimidating demeanor... or just a big mouth, which I suspect is the case with me... view post

Well my wife can certainly empathize, TH (she's 5'4''). I like to say that between the two of us, we have all the perspectives covered. I've always thought of both Saubon and Maithanet being around 6'3" view post
