posted 08 Aug 2004, 14:08 in The Thousandfold ThoughtThe Title by JustifiedHeretic, Peralogue

I agree with The Thousandfold Thought, because if you recall there are numerous times in Warrior-Prophet that Kellhus is talking to himself (directed towards his father) in his mind that he refers to The Thousandfold Thought, what it is and if he has obtained it. Therefore in my opinion, of the two choices, clearly the better title. view post

For myself with Characters and relations I was stuck. Akka - Can be easily related to, has that low self confidence factor that plays a huge part of us getting to like him, then when he escapes and Seswatha has kind of takne over him per say, I think he becomes such a stronger character when he reaches towards his potentials. He losses emotion towards Zin, towards Caring about Proyas, he just wants to see Esmi, which inevitably leads to more pain, worse then the torture by the Scarlet Spires, so I am hoping this leads to a showdown between him and Kellhus, cuz I ahve got my money on Akka. Proyas - Who could forget about lovable Proyas....uhh..yah. He was always my favorite Character because he SEEMS like he is suffering so much inwardly that he is a religous zealot on the out. We know who truly cares for Akka and Zin as is seen when he sees Zin again and he sees Esmi in bed with Kellhus. It is unfortunate however that due to his standing he cares more about his appearance in his religion that his friend, We must remember Akka has never once, ever, remarked about Inri Sejenus, yet Proyas constantly harasses Akka on being a socerer. To me that was a test of their friendship, although Proyas asked for forgiveness for being a fool ( as he finally comes to realize how blinded he has been) Akka rightfully declines to forgive but it can be seen that their bond has grown, which will play an important role in times to come Im thinking. Proyas seems to go through that Needs to be Accepted phase, where he needs to be accepted by Akka as a student, then find his faith and needs to be accepted (and the best I might add) in his faith. I think Zin losing his eyes and Akka surviving truly help open Proyass eyes to his true friends and his true self. Which is why I like him so much. Zin - Zin was always my second favorite character because I could relate myself to him so much, and his resemblances to Proyas. After his tortue however, I can only feel pity for this shell of a once great man when I read about him. It is unfortunate, because the character he was was such a strong character. Martemus - Ièll miss him and his practical ways. I really liked him and the way he was divided by what he thought was his faith (really seduced by Kellhuss words) and his commander (Conphas). This is truly seen when he says he would die to defence the concubine (The Nansur Standard, bue to Habit) but is then found hovering over Conphas waiting to kill him. Unfortunately however he is kiulled, which really sucked because he wa s agreat character. Just my two cents. view post

that would be flippin' awesome. Even if you were able to copy liek the game engine/designs from an already existed game. You know like something like, take character desgin and engine from maybe say "Ragnarok Online" and then create story (linear/non linear" and use sprites to play and so forth,. create maps. Who knows, just text based would not due somehting like this justice. view post

posted 09 Aug 2004, 03:08 in The Darkness That Comes BeforeBest character by JustifiedHeretic, Peralogue

I guess I'm going to have to go against everyone here and say my favorite character is Nersei Proyas. Here's why - Proyas, to me, seems to be that kid who is so consumed with needing to fit his role that he refuses to accept his lifelong friends, merely because they don't conform to what he thinks he has to be like (i.e. he religious devotion and Akka..clearly not so much). He just seemed to have this air about him when I read that I found really intruiging. He fights with himself so much, on one hand he hates Akka for being a sorcerer, but he loves him because he was his tutor and his close friend. Unfortunately in The Darkness, Proyas is not 100% able to overcome this gap, which makes you wait to see if he can bridge it. I just like seeing a character grow and develop and become worldly from a closed mind, I just really like him.. plus he has that whole "Mess with me and I'll kick your ass" attitude, gotta love it. view post

Hey Bryan. It really is good to hear of siblings backing their brother, especially when you have such high hopes for him, as we already know his books are going to be huge. And yes Scott did make socerers cool again, especially in the end of TWP when Akka is crazy, but he also expressed the awesomeness of Horsemen as seen in the Coryinians (sp? i think thats it...Proyas' group), and the sheer power of Gotian and his non-corrupt Shrial Knights, those guys are pretty beastin' view post

okay my books currently are - Book 1: Unholy Reign (its about the US invading Canada, fromt he viewpoint of a small resistance based around where i live, currently 5 chapters about 43 pages hand written, just meant to be a short thing) Book 2: The Faltering (set in medieval times, based around basic fantasy elements but the main philosophical point is the fallability of humanity and the mistake we make and their effects on our lives. The main Characters name is - Arandeh Du Gaianor (which in the old language of the book means Lord of the Earth) but he is living as an outsider but he doesn't know of his lineage, because he's been living with this old retired Knight who has been teaching him Ancient Swordsmanship. There is a rebellion in the kingdom between the army (upper and lower) and Arandeh joins the Upper Class as a mercenary, but sees the plight of the lower class and he starts questioning. And he mets his best friend (Luc Alavares) who is a sort of Archer/Hunter dealy, anyways ill post more as i get farther in, thats a brief overlook of the start of the book. view post

Text based just would not do this justice i dunno maybe get a visual engine form somewhere, ahve different classes, like Chosen - Sorcerer (advance) Footman - Shrial Knight Visuals would be percect for a game of this sort, however it would take far more effort..but far more rewarding them text. view post

I must say Mr. Bakker, that I've read a lot of works, with battle scenes, and to be brutally honest...everything pales in comparrison to your style. The way that in the end of WP when the the men of the Tusk are mere skeletons, yet rout the Kianene merely with their fanatisicm....(and need to eat), it was just incredible. Truly, I salute you. I was beginning to wonder if fantasy novels would ever appeal to me again, then I found your works, and BAAAAMMMM I didn't put them down. Ahh the way Akka blasted those Scarlets in the Library, or even the little doll killing that cat...oh it was intense! view post

Human Hunger posted 11 Aug 2004, 02:08 in Philosophy DiscussionHuman Hunger by JustifiedHeretic, Peralogue

This is just going to be a "rolls eyes" thread I'm thinking, but I would like to hear everyones opinions on this. Humanity is never content with what it is given, so thus our need for more and more, complexity after complexity is born until, we crave for less. For the simple, the plain, because we have crowded our lives with useless complexities that consume at monstrous rates what the Earth cannot reproduce at the same staggering rate, all the while still inwardly wanting more to prove our prowess, our power, our wealth. We say we want to save the world, to help it, to live better, but yesterday I saw a hippy driving an SUV....I mean really if you ahve "Peace on Earth" and "Strive for a Green Planet" bumperstickers on your vehicle, it should not be an SUV!!! In a rather unfortunate turns of events however there is no more to take, only so much can be offered from this world and from mankind itself and once that is gone, what will our hunger for greater, more powerful, more complex tangibles turn to? view post

agreed upon, ahhh why cant we be robots??...hmmm...but even in simplicity, if we overuse this, we are stuck with the same problem, even more, smaller, yet amounting to large heaps of useless complexities....GAH why??? I mean a Hippy in an SUV, he even had the long scraggily hair, the unkempt look, the tye-dye shirt, a hair band and a peace sign necklace...GAH!!!! an SUV!!! view post

I agree that a D&D type text would be fun, but it would require imagination between DM's and players and the game itself. Yes, graphics engines do limit gameplay, or rather limit complexity and CAN limit roleplayability.. (I'm on a Ragnarok Online Kick) But take RO as an example, that game is based in a world, where it is non-linear, you can creat guilds, and parties for massive player interaction, there are quests to learn sub-skills (skills not included in the general player skill sets per class) which creates awesome hours of play just to get those, there are PvP tournaments (player versus player) like gladiatorial combat, its just massive funn ( i like spelling fun with two n's..im wierd) I agree I would be interested in helping with either I suppose. but first and foremost, a name. Like "Earwa Online" or "The Three Seas" or something view post

Character Classes posted 11 Aug 2004, 04:08 in RPG DiscussionCharacter Classes by JustifiedHeretic, Peralogue

My two cents - Beginner - (Candidate/Commoner) (stick with forum) Job Class One - Warrior/Swordsman/Militamen (sword/spear fighter) - Apprentice/Adept/Student (magician) - Acolyte/Devotee/Healer (Healer) - Thief/Conman/Lowlife (knife user, thief) - Merchant/Peddler (merchant) - Archer/Bowman (Archer) (use above choices, as only one of the presented choices per class. i.e. swordsman or warrior or militiaman, only one, either apprentice, adept of student and so forth) Job Class Two - Mercenary/Shrial Knight/Dragoon - Schoolman/Socerer/Wizard - Shrial Priest/Monk/High Priest - Spy/Assassin/Rogue/Mobster - Blacksmith/Forger/Armourer - Hunter/Longbowman (for second job class, have player be able to choose one of the various presented choices, but have all available. i.e. I choose to be a swordsman, of all the above first job classes, I am able to change my class, I can choose to be a Mercenary, a Shrial Knight or Perhaps a Dragoon) Have each class have its own set of skills and tech, but classes within the same job set (Schoolman/Sorcerer/Wizard) have the same skills with minor differences. Just a thought, who knows. I suck at drawing, so perhaps someone could make sketches of some generic character classes??? who knows. view post

The Faltering (Prologue) posted 12 Aug 2004, 04:08 in Member Written WorksThe Faltering (Prologue) by JustifiedHeretic, Peralogue

So here it is. This is just the prologue. It is rough, it has been editied once and a basic introduction is given to the main Character. (oh and i cant find the attachment button...am i just blind??) Prologue: He who wields this blade shall carve the Earth. Steel echoed its brutal roar throughout the night as the blades crashed against each other. Rebellious sparks shot in all directions as the sharp edges came into contact and danced away from each other. The silence of the night was disturbed by the sounds of the steel searing the utopian calm. Panting heavily Arandeh raised his sword to his right shoulder, placed his left foot slightly ahead of the right, ready to attack, he lunged at his Master. Deftly Arandeh’s blade was guided away form harm and Aran was forced to move to the defensive. For an old man Capil moves far to fast. Arandeh staggered as he deflected a blow and forced his master’s sword to the outside of the pair, placing Arandeh in the offensive. He anticipates my moves. Arandeh swung his might two handed sword which careened off his Master’s sword and Arandeh fought to regain the momentum he has used in his initial swing. If he anticipates my standard moves, then he will never expect change. Using his gained momentum Arandeh planted his right foot and with one hand guided his sword to a thunderous connection with the hilt of his Master’s sword. The momentum toppled Capil who instantly found the cold steel of Aran’s sword placed against his Adam’s apple. Breathless, Arandeh sheathed his blade and extended his arm to help his Master off the cold, hard ground. “You are learning Aran, this is progress. You come from a long line of fantastic swordsman and I can see it runs in your blood, but talent still requires practice.” Capil commented, his chest still heaving as he gasped for air. “Perhaps you can now tell me the key to defeating an enemy who has studied every aspect of your training?” “Change Master. The key to defeating an opponent, who has studied your every move, is to change how you fight, to change your style, speed and movement patterns.” “Yes Aran, this is why you would have made an excellent Canucian Lord Knight, had the Kingdom not been overrun by the blasted Indolcialoters. Blasted Barbarians, they should just know when they are oppressed,” “That is an awfully naïve thing to say Capil. They may have been oppressed, but in this the possessed the strength of heart and pure strength to retaliate against their oppressors and win their freedom, it was our own foolishness that lead to our demise.” “Ah Young Arandeh, you are wise beyond your years, may that suit you accordingly in the coming years. You have completed your training with me the moment you defeated me in battle. There is nothing more that I can teach you, therefore you must set out to experience life for yourself. His Majesty, The King of Bayhakon is currently employing Mercenaries to complete missions for him that his trusted Paladins are not willing to do for him.” Odd. “Should they not be loyal to their King, Capil?” Arandeh questioned as the fire danced in within his greenish brown eyes, a small semblance to the fire of vengeance Capil knew dwelled within Aran’s heart. A gentle breeze tossed Aran’s wavy, eye length, light brown hair to the right side of his head as a questioning expression remained on his face. “Yes Aran they should, but in their times of peace, the famous Paladins of Bayhakon have become lazy and far too indulgent.” “I shall set off for the Kingdom in the morning.” Arandeh said as he rose to move to his tent to turn in for the night. “Capil?” Arandeh said as he turned around as he came upon his tent. “Before I leave can you tell me what the words inscribed on my sword mean?” “Yes Aran, I think it is time you know.” Capil said smiling as he stood up. “Hand me the sword.” Arandeh unsheathed the sword with ease as the steel glided past his right shoulder. Capil stood motionless, with the mighty blade lying in his hands. Centuries of power all contained in this swords, possessed by the Son of the Earth, a name Arandeh must never hear. “The words inscribed are Ancient Canucian. Two hundred years ago, this sword was forged to be giving as a reward to a brave Lord Knight for his loyalty and selflessness in protecting the King. However, when the sword was inscribed and blessed by the Priest of Nature, The Great Lord Knight was found unworthy to wield the blade. Legends state that, only in the Kingdoms greatest crisis will the sword be wielded, and with it the Earth itself shall change. The sword remained exactly where it had been laid by the forger upon its completion, sheathed with its hilt and handle hanging over the edge of the altar where it was blessed. The sword lay where it was placed by the forger, basking in its two hundred year purity until; you wielded it with one hand Aran. The words inscribed translate to: He who wields this blade shall carve the Earth.” As Capil finished his story Arandeh’s mind began to relieve the unexpected turn of events that placed the blade in his possession. The castle was set ablaze by Indolcialot raiders and her mighty ramparts breached by the silent assassins of the tribesmen. Arandeh awoke as he heard his childhood friend, the crown prince slain in his chambers. With tears running down his cheeks and an anger that burned stronger then the flames engulfing the castle Arandeh ran to the royal chambers, only to see his father brutally cut down by the assassin warriors. Enraged, Arandeh swung his sword but was knocked backwards against the wall and his sword flew from his hands across the room. Concentrating on his enemy, Arandeh stood and caught a glimpse of a swords hilt out of the corner of his eye. Rushing towards the sword, Arandeh dove, grasped the handle, swiftly unsheathed the sword and cut down his father’s murderer. With his chest heaving, Arandeh struggled to raise the massive blade, but brought it down with tremendous speed across the back of a second assassin. A man’s scream came from the hall as Arandeh turned to see Capil severing limb after limb of countless warriors in the hallway. Warm blood spurted across the wall and dripped off Capil’s face. “Young master Aran; you must flee the castle, at all costs.” “Capil, I am not leaving without you, you are the only family I have.” Arandeh caught a grin appear on Capil’s face as he was swarmed by warriors and one by one the assailants fell to crumpled heaps on the floor, spilling their life into puddles at Capil’s feet. “Well then it is settled Young Master, I shall come also.” A spark cracked from the fire and landed on Arandeh’s arm, causing a burning sensation that brought Arandeh’s memories an end and his mind to the present. “Hmm, why “Carve the Earth?”” “Your future holds many of the answers you seek, my son; you must find them for yourself. I have taught you all I know, the rest you must find for yourself. Good night Master DuGaianor.” “Capil, no one has spoken my family name since the invasion, since my father’s death. I am not strong enough to possess this name, perhaps in my future, when I am ready, until then I would only disgrace my father.” Arandeh said as he ducked into his tent away from the fire. Ah, Aran, soon you will understand, you are more then ready for your name, soon they will turn to you, and you are ready. Capil sat still by the fire long into the night, tears slowly falling from his cheeks. At sunrise, his only family would leave him, and he would live out the remainder of his days in the woods, alone. view post

I know its not entirely fiction, but it plays into the "You can never go home" theme, which is THE theme of Canadian Literature, which I think Scott used in TWP as well. I wont day where, but it involves Akka and so forth. yup my two cents. view post

you know, when i concepted the classes, i ahdnt really thought about nationatlities. But it could be done like Scylvendi - Barbarian Warrior Conriyans - Knight/Lord Knight Nansur - Merchant/Warrior something like that kinda deal and Chosen - Student/Sorcerer something like those. view post

awesome concept Check out Ragnarok Online ( i know it seems like im pushing that game) but the knights in that game have the choice to be mounted on pecopecos (which are their rendition of chocobo's kinda...giant tucan chocobos) it costs money to buy the mount and it reduces attack speed btu they learn a skill to even attack speed back out, its a very good concept. view post

Maybe we should point this out to Scott and see if indeed AC was the inspiration for Cnaiür ;)[/quote:251aphoa] Indeed this should be brought to his attention...can you imagine...Alice Cooper does rock though view post

But is not man fallable? So if we can make mistakes how can we ever be certain of the world around us? How can we be certain that the "facts" we know are not mere twists of theories to accomodate our wants. In this I say there can be no truth and if there was we could not know it, because there can be nothing for certain. view post
